Nærøysund AS aims to create optimum fish health and welfare by protecting the fish from stress, discomfort and pain, both during farming, transport and harvest, as well as by providing feed with the correct nutritional values, correct vaccination programmes and treatment. A special plan for fish health and animal welfare regulates this area and is revised in consultation with our fish health service.

Our production is planned with focus on the environment both internally and externally during the whole production process. All our employees are responsible for following the procedures and working in accordance with our environmental policy. Environmental concerns are also an important part of our internal control.

Feed
Farmed cod has good feed utilisation, that is to say that for every 1 kg of dry feed, a fish will grow by approx. 1 kg. Fish feed is supplied by Skretting (www.skretting.no), which is an ISO certified company. The feed has a high protein and low fat content, and contains natural marine ingredients such as oils and fish meal. The fish are fed with the help of an underwater camera to avoid over or underfeeding. Our feed supplier is an essential part of our value chain and buys raw materials exclusively from sustainable sources.

Sites
Sites are decisive for the health and quality of the fish. Before setting up new locations, the currents, depth and wind conditions are thoroughly analysed. We hire external consultants to carry out this work, as this requires special expertise.

Veterinary service
To ensure the fish maintain good health, we are routinely visited by a veterinary from Fjord-Lab AS (www.fjordlab.no) who once a month checks the health of the fish.

Escapes
Here at Nærøysud AS we work actively every day to avoid escapes, and in this area we have a policy of zero tolerance. As one of our measures to ensure that escapes do not take place, we hire professional divers who each month go down and check all the nets in the location. In addition we use extra fortified nets which comply with the prevailing requirements
